Psychogenic polydipsia is the excessive volitional drinking of water or other fluids and is usually observed in individuals with serious and persistent mental illness and/or developmental disability. The Mindfulness-Based Polydipsia Program provides the basis for treating polydipsia in these individuals using fluid restriction and mindfulness-based methods. The strength of this treatment package is that it enables the individual to control abnormal thirst by controlling his or her mind—through personal transformation that results from engaging in the mindfulness meditations. These meditations have the generalized effect of changing the individual’s relationship with his or her thoughts, thereby enabling self-control of excessive thirst.
